Automation and maintenance of warehouse processes

01 The Task

A customer from the healthcare sector operates an international distribution center that was equipped with extensive conveyor technology.
Blohm Consulting took on the task of designing, realizing and implementing all warehouse processes as well as the ongoing maintenance and further development of the system.

02 Characteristics of the processes

  • 4 different temperature ranges
  • 4 AKL, carton conveyor technology
  • 2 pallet warehouses, pallet conveyor technology
  • Automated deep-freeze warehouse
  • Full carton picking
  • Dispatch automation

03 Functionalities of the system

  • Decentralized SAP WMS connected to SAP ERP system
  • Goods receipt with palletizing and repacking into cartons
  • Putaway
  • Management of different temperature requirements
  • Dangerous goods handling
  • Case calculation taking into account temperature, shipping method, season, dangerous goods, etc.
  • Batch creation for 5 different picking processes
  • WzM picking
  • Full carton picking
  • Picking from pallets (conveyor technology)
  • Full pallet picking
  • Automatic packing stations
  • Dispatch sorter control
  • Dispatch and transportation planning
  • Loading

04 System structure

Warehouse control is largely automatic. The control station monitors the system and only deals with exceptions.
The case calculation calculates the shipping cartons.
Batch formation creates optimized batches so that, on the one hand, the shipping deadlines are met and, on the other hand, the conveyor technology is optimized by minimizing the number of retrievals for each picking process.
The WMS instructs the MFR component in SAP with the transport orders along the process chain. Only the WMS manages the stocks and processes.
The MFR communicates with the conveyor system.
Picking takes place on SAP touchscreens with a graphic display without a keyboard. The automatically connected packing stations provide the packages with special labels and papers. On the automatic shipping line, the cartons are automatically provided with shipping labels and sorted onto shipping lanes. In the dispatch area, transports are formed, palletized and loaded with system monitoring.
